What a numerology chart is
A numerology chart is the set of numbers worked out from two things: your full name at birth and your date of birth. In the Pythagorean tradition used here, its core is six numbers — the core numbers — each reduced to a single digit or a master number, and each read as an answer to a different question about the same person. The calculator above works out all six at once, adds your Hidden Passion, and maps your pinnacles and challenges underneath.
It is not a birth chart in the astrological sense. There are no planets, houses or aspects, and neither the time nor the place of birth enters the calculation. Everything is addition, and every step is printed beside its result so you can check it by hand.
What a chart offers is a vocabulary rather than a forecast: a set of specific descriptions you can hold up against your own experience, keeping what fits and discarding what does not.
The six numbers in your chart
Two numbers come from the date, three from the name, and one from combining the two halves. Each has its own calculator and guide:
- Life Path — Your whole date of birth, reduced — the number most readings lead with. Life Path calculator.
- Birthday — The day of the month alone, read as one specific talent. Birthday calculator.
- Expression — Every letter of your full birth name, read as your abilities; also called the Destiny number. Expression calculator.
- Soul Urge — The vowels of the name, read as inner motivation. Soul Urge calculator.
- Personality — The consonants, read as the impression you make before people know you. Personality calculator.
- Maturity — Life Path plus Expression, read as a theme that comes forward later. Maturity calculator.
- Hidden Passion — Not one of the six, but shown with them: the letter value from 1 to 9 that occurs most often in your name. When two or more values tie, the chart lists them all.
Date numbers and name numbers
The two halves of a chart behave differently, and knowing which is which prevents most confusion. The date numbers — Life Path and Birthday — are fixed for life and leave nothing to interpret before the reading begins: anyone who follows the same method gets the same answer. The name numbers — Expression, Soul Urge and Personality — depend on choices: which name, which spelling, how to treat a Y.
The standard input is the full name on your birth certificate, middle names included, spelled as registered. Accents are stripped to the base letter; hyphens and apostrophes divide words but add nothing; Y counts as a vowel unless it sits next to A, E, I, O or U in the same word, which is our Y rule. If you have changed your name, which name to use covers the usual convention of calculating both and reading the difference.
The Maturity number is where the halves meet: it adds the Life Path to the Expression, so it moves whenever the name half does, even though half of it comes from your date. The name half also carries a built-in check — the vowel total plus the consonant total always equals the Expression total before reduction — which check your work explains.
How to read your chart: a first pass
Once you have the six, resist reading them as six separate horoscopes. A short first pass in this order gets you most of the way; how to read your chart takes the same approach much further, with an example chart read all the way through.
- Start with the Life Path — It carries the most weight in this tradition. Then read the Expression as the equipment the Life Path has to work with.
- Read Soul Urge and Personality together — They split the same name into vowels and consonants, so a gap between them — wanting one thing, coming across as another — is often the most recognisable part of a chart.
- Look for repeats — The same number in two or three positions is the clearest signal a chart gives: one theme, stated more than once.
- Let conflicts stand — Two numbers that disagree are usually answering different questions. The disagreement is part of the reading; there is no need to pick a winner.
- Note the flags after the digits — Master numbers and karmic debt change how a number is read, not which number it is, so read the digit first and the flag second. Master numbers and karmic debt explain both.
Why your chart may differ from another calculator's
If another site gives you a different number, check the conventions before the arithmetic. These move results most often:
- Master numbers held at every step — We stop at 11, 22 or 33 wherever a reduction lands on one, including the birth year. So 1993 contributes 22 to a Life Path, and 15 May 1993 is a Life Path 33 here but a 6 on calculators that reduce the year to a single digit.
- The letter table — We use the Pythagorean table throughout. Chaldean calculators assign letters by sound and often give the same name different numbers; Pythagorean vs Chaldean compares the two.
- The name and the Y — A Y treated differently, a middle name dropped or a married surname used will change the name numbers — and the Maturity with them.
- Master numbers inside the Maturity — We add a master Life Path or Expression as 11, 22 or 33, not as its root digit. The final digit is the same either way; master numbers and karmic debt are not.
What your numerology chart does not include
The six core numbers describe a person, and they stay put. Several parts of numerology sit outside them, some shown alongside the chart and some on their own pages:
- Pinnacles and challenges — Four long periods of life, each with a theme and a difficulty, worked out from your date of birth. The chart maps them below your numbers; pinnacles and challenges explains how they are timed.
- Your personal year — A nine-year cycle that turns every 1 January and describes a period rather than a person. See the personal year calculator.
- Karmic lessons — The values from 1 to 9 that no letter of your name carries — the mirror image of the Hidden Passion. They have their own karmic lessons page.
- Compatibility — Comparing two people is a separate exercise: compatibility for two birth dates, name compatibility for two names.
Common questions
Which number in a numerology chart is the most important?
In the Pythagorean tradition, the Life Path: it comes from the one input nobody can dispute, and most readings are built around it. The Expression is usually read second. The Birthday and Maturity numbers carry the least weight on their own.
What name should I use for my numerology chart?
The full name on your birth certificate, middle names included, spelled as registered. If you now use a different name, calculate both: the tradition reads the birth name as the chart you were given and the current name as the one you are living in.
Do I need my time or place of birth?
No. Those belong to astrology. A numerology chart uses only your date of birth and your name, so two people born on the same day with the same birth name have the same chart.
Can my numerology chart change?
The date numbers never change. The name numbers — and the Maturity with them — change only if you calculate from a different name. What moves over time are the cycles built on your date: your personal year every year, and your pinnacles over decades.
What is the Hidden Passion number?
The letter value, from 1 to 9, that occurs most often in your full birth name, read as a talent you keep returning to. When two or more values occur equally often, the chart shows all of them. It is not one of the six core numbers, and it can never be a master number.
